Health professionals’ perspectives of safety issues in mental health services: A qualitative study

The study aimed to explore mental health professionals’ perceptions of patient safety issues across community and inpatient services. Fourteen professionals settings participated in qualitative interviews. Framework analysis, guided by the Yorkshire Contributory Factors – Mental Health, was used analyse data. Safety identified mapped on 19 21 factors Health. most frequently mentioned participants were ‘safety culture’ which focused raising concerns, learning from incidents influence targets; ‘communication systems’ support effective communication between staff; ‘service user factors’ including a perceived increase illness acuity; process’ how patients access interact with services; ‘staff workload’ being as unmanageable. consider there be broad range associated Future research should aim develop interventions improve raised professionals.
